Center History
From its humble beginnings in 1976 to its present splendor, West End Medical Centers Inc. celebrates over three decades of providing world class health care and dedicated service to Atlanta and its surrounding metropolitan areas.
Originally named 'University Center Community Health Centers, Inc.', West End Medical Centers, Inc. has always been located at 868 York Avenue in the Historic West End. Over the years, West End Medical Centers, Inc. has grown from 12,000 square feet, with only eight exam rooms, to its current 41,000 square foot state of the art health care facility including 41 exam rooms and four additional sites. The center currently serves more than 26,000 patients annually, generating 55,000 patient visits.
From 1979 to August 2010, Daisy L. Harris served as President & CEO of West End Medical Centers, Inc. Mrs. Harris worked to ensure that the center offered quality medical programs and provided quality health care, community outreach and community development. Dr. Marian Chivers, the first Medical Director and current chair of the Board of Directors, has worked side-by-side with Mrs. Harris for over 20 years, embracing the vision of WEMC, Inc. and implementing the best practices to move the organization to where it is today. In August of 2010, Dr. Michael W. Brooks, M.D., MBA was appointed to the position of President & CEO. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Brooks held the integral positions of the Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Medical Officer. In his roles as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Brooks oversaw the organization’s managed care contracts with the state’s community management organizations. He managed the center’s information technology initiatives, that included network development, the Visionary practice management system and implementing the electronic health records system. As Chief Medical Officer, he provided oversight for the center’s Clinical Administration Department, which includes medical providers, as well as the dental, social services, radiology, health education, health information management and nursing departments.
West End Medical Centers, Inc. has helped to elevate the community's expectations of health care and raise the community's standard of health awareness. The center continues to build its history through assertive efforts to create a healthier community.
