Did you know that for what it costs for a family to enjoy high end satellite services, a mother and father would be able to afford quality healthcare for their two children? Did you know the State of Georgia has the 14th highest percentage of uninsured children in the nation, with over 300,000 uninsured children reported? With the increased number of unemployed residents in our communities, the need for affordable healthcare services has increased. Parents are not able to afford the basic healthcare for their children. How can a child be expected to succeed in school when (s)he has missed several days due to health problems? How can an adolescent be expected to become a pillar of their community when illness prohibits them from achieving their personal, academic and professional goals? This is a serious problem. Don’t parents understand how important good health is to the overall success of their children? For some parents it is easier said than done. A trip to the doctor for a routine checkup proves to be taxing on a family’s budget. Doctor visits can be so expensive that it prohibits children from receiving the services they need. West End Medical Centers, Inc. (WEMC) has seen the barriers that families are facing and is charged with breaking down those barriers and provide comprehensive healthcare to medically underserved populations and give them access to Georgia’s healthcare plan for children of working families.
In September, 2009, WEMC was federally granted funds to provide FREE enrollment assistance into PeachCare for Kids™, Georgia’s healthcare plan for children of working families. WEMC’s goal is to make sure Georgia families are aware that quality healthcare is accessible for their children. An Outreach Team has been developed to go out into the communities and promote PeachCare for Kids™ and to offer free onsite enrollment assistance into the program. The Outreach Team is able to visit daycares, businesses, churches, schools, community meetings, recreation centers, etc. and conduct free health presentations, provide free health screenings and free onsite enrollment assistance into PeachCare for Kids™. Partnering with these community organizations, businesses and schools strengthen the Outreach Team’s message about the benefits of PeachCare for Kids. Organizations such as Atlanta Housing Authority, East Point Housing Authority, Latin Community Association, Georgia Department of Labor and AMERIGROUP Community Care, act as referral agencies and inform their clients that access to affordable healthcare is available.
The Outreach Team is not the only PeachCare for Kids™ advocate at WEMC. Born in March of 2010, child friendly mascot PeachBear for PeachCare devotes his time to the surrounding communities of WEMC. PeachBear loves going out into the community with the Outreach Team and informing residents about the benefits of the program and adds levity to any meeting, discussion, event or program he attends. PeachBear leads enrollment drives, makes special appearances, conducts and health education presentations that are targeted towards children. Together, PeachBear, and The Outreach Team will reach their goal of bridging the gap between communities and accessible, affordable, quality healthcare.
